Kubernetes Fundamentals

In this workshop you will learn what is Kubernetes and how to get started using it. To start off, we will explain the Kubernetes architecture and basic Kubernetes concepts. With plently of hands-on exerices, you will create your own containerized application, deploy it to Kubernetes, set up services, config maps and secrets. Once you deployed the application you will see how easy it is to scale it and do zero-downtime and blue-green deployments.

What will I learn?

At a high level, the workshop is separated into the theoretical part, where you will learn the concepts and theory behind different topics, and in the practical part, we will demonstrate the concepts using demos that you can follow along.
  • Kubernetes architecture and building blocks
  • Kubernetes set up using Docker, Minikube and cloud providers
  • Kubernetes resources and how to use them
  • Kubernetes CLI and Dashboard
  • Deploying and scaling applications

By the end of the workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Install a Kubernetes cluster
  • Use Kubernetes CLI to manage resources
  • Create deployments, secrets and config maps
  • Deploy and scale applications

Audience

This workshop is suited for the beginners (software and DevOps engineers). You need to be familiar with basic Docker concepts (i.e. build, push and pull the Docker images).

Prerequisites

The workshop participants should be familiar with Docker basics. You will need a Mac, Linux or Windows computer with the following installed:

  • Docker
  • Git
  • Code/text editor (e.g. VS Code or equivalent)
